Australia Post + ReturnMate

The default carrier for most Australian merchants. ReturnMate integrates with the MyPost Business API to generate branded return labels, pull live PAC rates, and validate customer shipping addresses before a label is ever issued.

§ 01 — Capabilities

What the Australia Post connection actually does.

  • MyPost Business label creation (inbound + outbound)
  • Live PAC rate quoting at the customer portal
  • Address validation (street, suburb, state, postcode) pre-label
  • Tracking sync via MyPost Business API + webhook events
  • Branded labels with merchant logo
  • Dangerous goods detection and routing (AusPost is blocked for DG — see StarTrack)
§ 02 — In practice

Where it earns its place.

Customer-paid return shipping

At portal submission the customer sees a live AusPost quote for the cheapest service. If they accept, the shipping fee is charged via Shopify checkout and the label is generated only on payment.

Merchant-paid free returns

For faulty / warranty returns where the merchant covers shipping, the label is auto-generated on RMA approval with no customer payment step.

Address validation

Customer addresses are validated before the label is generated. AusPost's PAC API rejects invalid suburb/postcode combinations — we catch and suggest the valid version in the portal so labels aren't wasted.

§ 03 — Setup

How Australia Post gets connected.

Carrier accounts are set up by our team, not by you. We contact Australia Post directly, obtain API access against your existing commercial account, and apply it — so you never have to source or handle API credentials.

  1. You send us three things

Your existing Australia Post account number, written authority for ReturnMate to contact them on your behalf, and your account manager's name, email and phone number.

  2. We contact Australia Post

Our support team requests API access against your account and handles the paperwork and technical back-and-forth with the carrier.

  3. We apply the credentials

Credentials are stored encrypted against your shop. They are never shown to you and never need to be — there is nothing for you to paste or maintain.

  4. We test it end to end

We generate a test label — including the dangerous goods transport document where it applies — and confirm it works before the carrier goes live for your team.

Turnaround varies by carrier, depending on how quickly they issue API access. Support confirms the expected timeline for Australia Post when you start onboarding. Don't have an account with them yet? We can help you set one up.

§ FAQ

Questions about Australia Post.

Can Australia Post handle dangerous goods?

No. AusPost does not accept lithium batteries or most other ADG-classified goods. ReturnMate detects DG items and routes them to StarTrack (under 22kg) or TNT (over 22kg) automatically; AusPost is blocked for those shipments.

Is return-postage PAC pricing included?

Yes. The PAC (Parcel Avoider / Consumer) rate is queried live at portal submission so the customer sees the actual shipping cost before committing.

Do I get tracking events in real time?

AusPost pushes tracking events via webhook (when configured) and ReturnMate polls the tracking API every 30 minutes as a fallback. Both update the RMA timeline automatically.
