NZ Post + ReturnMate
NZ Post is the default carrier for New Zealand domestic returns. ReturnMate connects via OAuth2 to NZ Post's REST API for label generation, eShip rate quoting, and tracking sync. Currently in Beta — production-ready for label generation and tracking, with feature expansion (advanced rate optimisation, pickup booking) still landing.
What the NZ Post connection actually does.
- OAuth2 connection — no API key paste
- NZ domestic label creation
- eShip rate quoting at the customer portal
- Address validation pre-label generation
- Tracking sync via REST polling
- Limitation: no DG support — DG returns from NZ route via Mainfreight or FedEx
Where it earns its place.
NZ-only merchant operations
Merchants based in or shipping primarily to New Zealand use NZ Post as the default low-cost domestic carrier. ReturnMate handles label, rate and tracking the same way it does AusPost in AU.
Trans-Tasman returns inbound to NZ warehouse
AU customer returns to an NZ-based warehouse: outbound carrier handles the trans-Tasman leg, NZ Post handles any onward NZ domestic movement. Surfaces as a single RMA in ReturnMate.
Cost-effective non-DG returns
For non-DG returns inside NZ, NZ Post is generally cheaper than Mainfreight or FedEx. ReturnMate rate-shops at the portal so the customer sees the best available price.
Connect NZ Post.
- OAuth2 connect to NZ Post
Settings → Carriers → NZ Post → Connect. Popup runs OAuth against your NZ Post Business account. Tokens stored encrypted per shop.
- Configure default service codes
Pick which NZ Post products to use for inbound returns vs outbound replacements. Defaults are sensible for most merchants.
- Generate a test label
Verify credentials end-to-end with a test label. NZ Post provides a sandbox environment for label testing without live billing.
Questions about NZ Post.
What does the Beta status mean for NZ Post?
The integration is production-deployed and live for merchants using it today — labels generate, rates quote, tracking syncs. Beta means we're still expanding the feature surface (advanced rate optimisation, scheduled pickup, additional service codes) and reserve the right to change behaviour as we learn from real merchant usage. No production downtime is expected.
Can NZ Post handle dangerous goods returns?
No. NZ Post does not accept lithium batteries, aerosols, or most other DG-classified goods through their domestic eShip product. ReturnMate detects DG SKUs and routes them to Mainfreight or FedEx automatically. NZ Post is blocked for those shipments.
Can I use NZ Post for international shipments from NZ?
NZ Post does offer international shipping but the current ReturnMate integration focuses on NZ domestic. International outbound from NZ is on the Beta-expansion roadmap; in the meantime, FedEx covers NZ-origin international.
