PostNL + ReturnMate

BetaThis integration is production-deployed and merchant-usable today. We're still expanding feature coverage and may iterate on behaviour as we learn from real usage. No service interruptions are expected.

PostNL is the default parcel network for the Netherlands and a strong EU cross-border option. ReturnMate connects to the PostNL API for barcode generation, label confirmation, and event-level tracking on your PostNL contract. Newly released in Beta.

§ 01 — Capabilities

What the PostNL connection actually does.

  • NL domestic and EU parcel labels via the PostNL API
  • Standard, signature-on-delivery, and EU parcel products
  • Automatic 3S barcode generation and label confirmation in one flow
  • Multi-parcel shipments — one label per parcel under a shared reference
  • Event-level tracking sync mapped onto the RMA timeline
  • Label PDFs served straight into the portal and admin
§ 02 — In practice

Where it earns its place.

Netherlands-resident merchants

PostNL covers the overwhelming majority of NL domestic parcel volume. Returns ride your existing PostNL contract with labels generated straight from the RMA.

EU cross-border parcels

The EU parcel products extend the same flow to Belgian, German, and wider EU returns without a second carrier contract.

Detailed tracking on the RMA timeline

PostNL's event-level tracking (in Dutch and English) syncs onto the RMA timeline so support sees exactly where a return is without leaving ReturnMate.

§ 03 — Setup

How PostNL gets connected.

Carrier accounts are set up by our team, not by you. We contact PostNL directly, obtain API access against your existing commercial account, and apply it — so you never have to source or handle API credentials.

  1. You send us three things

Your existing PostNL account number, written authority for ReturnMate to contact them on your behalf, and your account manager's name, email and phone number.

  2. We contact PostNL

Our support team requests API access against your account and handles the paperwork and technical back-and-forth with the carrier.

  3. We apply the credentials

Credentials are stored encrypted against your shop. They are never shown to you and never need to be — there is nothing for you to paste or maintain.

  4. We test it end to end

We generate a test label — including the dangerous goods transport document where it applies — and confirm it works before the carrier goes live for your team.

Turnaround varies by carrier, depending on how quickly they issue API access. Support confirms the expected timeline for PostNL when you start onboarding. Don't have an account with them yet? We can help you set one up.

§ FAQ

Questions about PostNL.

What does Beta mean for PostNL?

The integration is deployed and available to connect today — barcodes, labels, and tracking are wired end-to-end. Beta means it's newly released and still accumulating real-world merchant mileage; test on the sandbox before going live.

Can labels be cancelled?

PostNL has no cancel endpoint — but unconfirmed labels simply expire, and confirmed shipments are only invoiced when scanned into the network, so an unused label costs nothing.

Are Smart Returns supported?

Not yet — PostNL Smart Returns is a separate product. Current returns are standard shipments addressed to your warehouse, which the customer hands in at any PostNL point. Smart Returns is on the Beta-expansion roadmap.

Does PostNL support dangerous goods?

No — DG-flagged SKUs are automatically routed to a DG-capable carrier and PostNL is blocked for those shipments.
