Carriers integration

Canada Post + ReturnMate*

BetaThis integration is production-deployed and merchant-usable today. We're still expanding feature coverage and may iterate on behaviour as we learn from real usage. No service interruptions are expected.

Canada Post is the default carrier for Canadian domestic returns and the cost-effective option for cross-border returns into the US. ReturnMate connects to Canada Post's REST API for label generation, live rate quoting, address validation, and tracking sync — covering Regular Parcel, Expedited Parcel, Xpresspost, and the Tracked Packet international services. Currently in Beta — production-ready for Canadian domestic and US cross-border, with broader international service expansion landing in upcoming releases.

§ 01 — Capabilities

What the integration does.

  • Canada Post REST API integration with username + password authentication
  • Domestic Canadian labels — Regular Parcel, Expedited Parcel, Xpresspost, Priority
  • International outbound — Tracked Packet USA, Tracked Packet International, Xpresspost USA
  • Live rate quoting at the customer portal with delivery time estimates
  • Address validation and postal code formatting (A1A 1A1 standardisation)
  • Tracking sync via REST polling with EVENT-level granularity
  • Limitation: limited dangerous-goods support — most lithium batteries and DG items route via FedEx or UPS instead
§ 02 — Use cases

How merchants use it.

Canadian domestic returns

Canada Post is the universally-available domestic carrier with delivery to every Canadian address including remote and rural. ReturnMate generates Expedited Parcel labels for inbound returns and surfaces live rates at the customer portal.

Cross-border returns into the US

For Canadian merchants with US customers, Tracked Packet USA is the cost-effective option for return shipping under 4lb. Customs documentation generates automatically. For heavier or DG cross-border, route via FedEx or UPS.

Rural and PO Box delivery

Canada Post is the only carrier that delivers to every Canadian PO Box and rural route. ReturnMate detects these address types and routes to Canada Post automatically when private couriers wouldn't accept them.

Drop-off at any Canada Post outlet

Customers can drop off prepaid returns at any of Canada Post's 6,000+ retail outlets and counters. ReturnMate links to the Canada Post outlet finder directly from the customer portal so customers find their nearest drop-off point.

§ 04 — FAQ

Questions about Canada Post.

When should I use Canada Post over FedEx or UPS in Canada?

Canada Post is consistently cheaper for non-DG parcels under 5kg and is the only carrier that reaches every Canadian address (PO Boxes, rural routes, remote communities). For heavier parcels, time-definite delivery, or DG returns, FedEx or UPS are usually the better choice. ReturnMate rate-shops at the customer portal — for any specific shipment, the cheapest accepting carrier is offered.

Does Canada Post handle dangerous goods?

Limited support. Canada Post accepts some Class 9 (miscellaneous) goods including small lithium batteries installed in devices under specific watt-hour ratings, but standalone batteries, aerosols and most other DG classes are restricted. For lithium-powered product returns at any meaningful volume, ReturnMate routes via FedEx or UPS instead.

Can customers drop off Canada Post returns at retail outlets?

Yes. Canada Post operates over 6,000 retail outlets and counters across Canada that accept drop-offs of prepaid parcels. ReturnMate surfaces the outlet finder directly from the customer portal so customers can find their nearest location at portal submission time.

How does Canada Post pricing compare for cross-border US returns?

For sub-4lb cross-border returns into the US, Tracked Packet USA is generally cheaper than FedEx International Economy or UPS Standard. Above that, the comparison narrows and depends on negotiated rates with the private couriers. Canada Post is rarely competitive for time-sensitive cross-border (1–2 day delivery) where the private couriers dominate.

When is Canada Post coming out of Beta?

Beta status reflects ongoing feature expansion (advanced rate optimisation, broader international service codes, contract rate refinements), not stability concerns. The integration is production-deployed today for Canadian domestic and US cross-border returns. Exit-Beta target depends on field feedback from merchants currently using it; we will move the badge once feature surface reaches parity with the AU carriers.
