Returns and compliance software for cleaning and chemical products.

A corrosive in a retail box, posted back by a customer — that's the risk.

ReturnMate is returns and compliance software for Shopify merchants selling cleaning and chemical products. It holds the hazard class on the product record so the return path is decided before a label exists, asks the compliance questions and requires photo evidence in the portal, keeps safety data sheets and evidence on the RMA, closes high-risk cases through Remote Resolve without creating a shipment, and captures the condition of what actually arrives at the dock.

§ 01 — WHY THIS CATEGORY

Four things a generic returns app gets wrong here.

You control how product leaves your warehouse. You do not control how a customer packs it for the return leg — and for corrosives, oxidisers and toxics, that is exactly where things go wrong.

You don't control the repack

Customers repack chemicals in whatever is to hand. The only safe assumptions are the ones made before the label is issued.

Leaks in transit

Class decides if post is possible

Hazard class determines whether the item can be returned by post at all — a decision that belongs on the product record, not in a ticket thread.

Non-compliant labels

Mixed returns, several classes

One order can bring back a corrosive cleaner, a pool oxidiser and a flammable solvent. Flattening them to one class documents none of them.

Flattened documentation

Sometimes it shouldn't ship

For a split container of oxidiser, the safest consignment is no consignment. The workflow needs a resolution path that doesn't create one.

Risk shipped needlessly
  • Safety data sheets travel with the decision, held on the RMA rather than a shared drive
  • The portal asks the compliance questions before a label exists
  • Many chemical classes carry carrier restrictions beyond the paperwork
  • Condition is captured at the dock on containers that may be damaged or leaking
§ 02 — COMPLIANCE

Capture the hazard, then decide the path.

Hazard details live against the SKU, so the decision about whether and how an item can come back is made from the product record rather than by whoever picks up the ticket.

Classification logic, transport documents and the full hazard-class coverage are detailed on dangerous goods handling; the merchant-side practice is covered in dangerous goods returns in Australia. ReturnMate supports the compliance workflow — it doesn't replace your own regulatory obligations or advice.

§ 03 — ONE RETURN, MAPPED

The return where nothing ships.

The same claim carries a risk question, an evidence question and a record question. Handled on one RMA, the best resolution for a damaged oxidiser — no shipment at all — is a workflow, not an improvisation.

QUESTION 01RISK

Should this travel at all?

A split container of oxidiser has no good journey. The safest consignment is none — refund the customer and keep the hazard where it is.

Remote Resolve closes the case without a return shipment being created.

QUESTION 02EVIDENCE

Decide on photos, not on arrival

The portal captures the damage, the batch and the fault detail at submission — so the decision is made on evidence rather than after the item is in transit.

Return reasons require photos; the call is made before anything moves.

QUESTION 03RECORD

Where's the SDS when you need it?

Months later, the question is what you knew and when. The sheet, the photos and the decision need to be on the same record.

SDS and evidence held against the RMA in object storage, with the audit trail.

§ 05 — RETURN ROUTING

What the customer is allowed to choose.

The portal decides the return method from the product record, before the customer sees an option — and for damaged or high-risk items the offered method is no shipment at all.

DG road service

Australia Post is excluded for DG; StarTrack or TNT selected by weight, with the item's class documented.

SEALED, UNDAMAGED STOCK

Remote Resolve

Refund, replacement or a part sent — the case closes without a chemical travelling anywhere.

DAMAGED OR HIGH-RISK ITEMS

Plain parcel label

Never offered where the class excludes it. Suppressed by the product record rather than left to staff judgement.

BLOCKED BY HAZARD CLASS
  • Mixed consignments documented per item — several classes never flatten into one
  • Carrier acceptance is the final gate on every chemical consignment
  • Condition captured at the dock on a container that may be leaking
  • The portal asks the compliance questions before approval, not after transit

Evidence capture at submission is on the customer portal; condition capture at the dock is on receiving.

§ FAQ

Chemical product returns questions.

Can we attach safety data sheets to a return?

Yes, through the general attachment system — files are held against the RMA in object storage alongside photos and notes. There is no SDS-specific field or automatic lookup; you attach the sheet you already maintain.

What if the product should not be shipped back at all?

Use Remote Resolve. The case is resolved — refund, replacement, or a part sent out — without a return shipment being created, which for some chemical classes is the only sensible answer.

Can the portal ask compliance questions before approving?

Yes. Return reasons can require photo evidence, and the portal captures fault detail up front, so the decision is made on evidence rather than after the item is already in transit.

How do we handle a mixed return with several hazard classes?

Each item carries its own dangerous goods profile, so a mixed consignment is documented per item rather than flattened to a single class. Whether they can travel together is a packing decision that stays with you.

Which chemical classes can come back by post at all?

That's decided by the hazard class on the product record, not by the ticket. In Australia, Australia Post is excluded for DG and the consignment routes to StarTrack or TNT by weight — but many chemical classes carry carrier and service restrictions beyond the paperwork, so carrier acceptance is always the final gate.
